Heavenly Ski Resort is a ski resort located on the California-Nevada border in South Lake Tahoe. It has 85 runs and 29 lifts that are spread between California and Nevada and a four base facility. The resort was recently purchased by Vail Resorts, Inc. The resort has 4,800 acres (19 km²) making it the largest ski resort in California. It is also Tahoe's highest mountain with a peak of 10,067 ft (3,068 m) and the longest vertical drop on the U.S. west coast of 3,500 feet (1067 m). With 360 inches (9 m) of snow annually and one of America's largest snowmaking systems, their season usually runs from the middle of November to late April. Vail Resorts is currently starting on their 40 million dollar improvements.
History On the afternoon of January 5, 1998, Heavenly was the scene of the loss of musician and politician Sonny Bono. While skiing alone, Bono struck a tree on Orion, an intermediate slope high on Heavenly's Nevada side.
